Looking for a Cat? Have you thought about...
We're always happy to offer people advice on caring for cats, and here is some information to answer some of your basic questions. If any of the points are unclear, or if you need further information, please do let us know:
1.Access to the outdoors
- Your cat must be able to access the outdoors daily; a cat flap is the best option to ensure the cat maintains independence.
- Cats should be brought in at night time.
- Lead walks are not suitable for cats and is not a substitute for free access.
2.Free food available throughout the day
- Your cat should be fed regular good quality meals to maintain ideal weight and condition.
- As well as dry food, the cat should also have wet food to ensure the health of their urinary tract.
- Fresh water must always be available.
3.Companionship and stimulation
- As much as cats are independent animals they still need companionship and often love the company of other cats.
- Cats should have a variety of toys to play with in order to prevent boredom. Play mice, rolling balls and feathers on a stick are suitable toys.
- It is a good idea to invest in a scratch post as this can prevent your cat from scratching your furniture.
4.Training
- It is important to litter train your cat as soon as you get him or her home. Make sure you keep the litter tray in the same place (but away from food bowls) and show your cat where it is.
- Ensure that there is fresh litter available daily and is regularly poop scooped.
5.Vet bills and Insurance
- Unfortunately there is no equivalent to the NHS for cats in the UK; all medical treatment has to be paid for. Veterinary fees can become painfully expensive without insurance. But, by ensuring your cat for approximately £10.00 per month, you will have the peace of mind that should anything happen to your cat you will be financially covered.
- Please be aware that you can expect to pay up to £8,000 over the lifetime of a cat.
- Take a look at Animal Friends Insurance, a unique not-for-profit insurance who support The Mayhew Animal Home with each commission.
