How To Adopt

Adoption Policy

Adopting an animal is something that you should take time to consider. It's a decision that may affect the next twenty years of your life, and we strongly recommend visiting the 'Have you thought about?' sections of our website for Cats, Dogs and Rabbits before looking further into adopting an animal.

We consider each potential adopter as an individual and will consider families with young children, provided we have a suitable match available, and the family can demonstrate that they are aware of the extra care needed when mixing children and dogs.

Before adopting an animal from The Mayhew you will be required to undergo a home visit. This entails an informal interview to make sure that you are aware of the responsibilities of taking on an animal and that the environment is suitable for the animal you wish to adopt.

Adoption fees are: This fee includes:
  • £120.00 - Dogs
  • £75.00 - Cats
  • £40.00 - Rabbits
  • £20.00 - Guinea Pigs
  • Neutering
  • Micro-chipping
  • At least first vaccinations
  • De-fleaing / Worming treatment
  • Full veterinary health check
  • Starter pack of food
  • One year’s complimentary Friends of The Mayhew membership

Animal Viewing Times

  • Tuesday - Friday: 12 noon - 3.30pm (All animals)
  • Saturday: 1.00pm - 3.30pm (All animals)
  • Sunday & Monday: 1.00pm -3.30pm (Cats only)

No appointment is necessary at any of these times, but these sessions become very busy and you must expect to wait.

Before attending a viewing, you will need to fill in an Adoption Questionnaire. These questionnaires are available from our reception, however we advise downloading, printing and filling in the form at home as this will save you time at The Mayhew. You can download our Adoption Questionnaire here: Dogs | Cats | Rabbits | Guinea Pigs

We also offer a guided tour of The Mayhew Animal Home every Saturday, Sunday and Monday commencing at 2.00pm sharp. This is a great opportunity to have a look around The Mayhew, however if you see an animal that you would like to adopt, you must come back for an animal viewing session at one of the times above.

Please note: The Mayhew Animal Home is NOT in the expanded Congestion Charging Zone.

  • Cats: Saturday 11am or on agreement with our adoption officer. This outtake will last between 30 minutes and an hour.

Rehoming Disclaimer:

The Mayhew Animal Home cannot guarantee that any animal seen on this website will be suitable for an individual prospective owner.

The animals displayed here are currently in our care. They have differing needs and can only be matched accurately to a new home once one of our adoption officers has interviewed a prospective new owner. Please be aware that under no circumstances can we reserve an animal until an interview has been completed. Please note that you have to be 18 years old or over to adopt an animal from us.

The Mayhew Animal Home cannot guarantee that any animal seen on the website will be at the centre on visiting.

Animals are continually adopted from our organisation. Although this site is regularly updated, there may be occasions when an animal appearing on the website has already been adopted. We are able to confirm by telephone or email if a particular animal is still available but we do urge you to visit as we always have many animals waiting for new homes.

The Mayhew Animal Home cannot accept responsibility for the temperament of any animal once it has been adopted.

All Mayhew animals are animals given thorough health and temperament assessments. This gives us an insight into the animals' character and enables us to make a considered decision as to which type of home would be best for the animal. However, once an animal has settled into a new home, their behaviour can sometimes alter. The Mayhew Animal Home can only assess an animal on the behaviour it displays whilst in our care. We offer support for anyone experiencing behavioural difficulties with their pet after adoption and at any time in the animals' life.
