Volunteer Case Study:
Fran Llewellin

This month we hear from a volunteer who has been integral to the running of the fundraising department for the last few months. Fran Llewellin began helping to organise events when The Mayhew's Volunteer Coordinator Kelly Andrews recently left for maternity leave, and has done an amazing job keeping things afloat!

My name is Fran Llewellin and I have been volunteering at the Mayhew for 4 months. Despite only having been here a short time, I have already experienced how varied helping at The Home can be.  From helping to clean out the cats on a Saturday morning to fundraising in Harrods, I always find volunteering here enjoyable.

As well as helping to raise money for the home, one of the things I most enjoy about helping at collections is meeting people and telling them about the work The Mayhew does for animals and people in the local community.  It is always nice when people who have adopted a Mayhew animal in the past come over and tell you how well their pet has settled in their home and become one of the family, or when people enquire about adopting an animal.

I also spend time lending a hand at the fundraising office; this often involves planning fundraising events such as supermarket collections and making sure volunteers have everything that they need on the day.  Recently I have also started to help co-ordinate volunteers for fundraising events.  So far this has been really interesting and very rewarding when volunteers come forward and offer to give up some of their spare time to help out at the events.

Events held at the home are always a lot of fun and currently everyone in the fundraising office is busy planning our summer Open Day which takes place on Sunday July 15th.  This will be my first Mayhew Open Day and I am quickly finding out what a big and exciting event this will be for everyone involved.

At the moment we need lots of volunteers to help us set up the open day and also to give their time during the event. If you would like to get involved in what promises to be a fantastic day for all, please contact Vicki in the fundraising office, and I’m sure she’ll be able to find a job (or two) for you to do!

Volunteering at The Mayhew is fun and a great way to meet different types of people. It’s also really nice to know that the work you are doing directly helps animals that may not have had a good start to life, so I think it’s the perfect way to spend your spare time.  In the future I would like to work full-time for an animal welfare organisation. Volunteering at the Mayhew is a really great opportunity for me to get some experience of working for a charity, which will hopefully one day help me to find a job in this sector.
