Happily Homed - Joe

Dear Mayhew,

We wanted to update you on the progress on Joe, the ginger Tom we adopted a year ago. Once we had decided to adopt a rescue cat, we felt it incredibly important to help where the need is greatest, hence we decided to go for an older cat. Of course we were also swayed by his film-star good looks!

JoeJoe is 15-16 years old and still in great health. My advice to anyone adopting an older cat would be don’t assume anything! Joe has days when he is a pensioner and days when he reverts to being a kitten again. He sleeps a bit more than younger cats, is not impressed by toys and doesn’t scratch furniture, but also has mad half hours which involve running up and down the hallway and staircase at speed accompanied by lots of loud attention-seeking meowing!

Joe is the most sociable cat I’ve ever met and returns our love in bucket loads. He often comes straight to the foot of the stairs when we come home at night and chats away happily as if letting us know about his day. The rest of the evening is then spent never too far from either of us and usually involves cuddles and gratuitous purring. Occasionally he will just stretch out one paw to make contact with your hand or shoulder as if too say “I’m still here.”

Joe

Joe may be down to two teeth, which makes his lip curl upwards in the style of Elvis, but this doesn’t seem to hinder him in the slightest as he happily gums biscuits and treats without a problem. He also came to us with a slight heart murmur and a renal diet. Both conditions have improved significantly and he is now eating a more varied mix with normal food.

Our aim is to make his final years as perfect as possible so we spoil him rotten with as much love and attention as he demands. The latest addition to our house is a large fleece bed (see photo) which hooks onto a radiator and has allowed him to bask in the heat throughout the winter. We are now looking forward to his second summer with us where he can resume his position stretched out on the roof terrace in the sunny spot near to the barbeque (just in case anyone might drop a bit of steak or a sausage.)

Thank-you for letting us adopt him, he is a joy to be with. We’d also like to thank his lovely foster mums Astrid & Kim who took such good care of him.
