A Day In the Life - Animal Nursing Assistant
This month we spend a day in the life of one of our two Animal Nursing Assistants, Nikki Lee. Nikki assists our veterinary department in all kinds of work and today she takes us through a few of her duties.
The veterinary team will get together each morning and organise what our daily plan will be. At The Mayhew Community Veterinary Clinic, we have a team of two trainee veterinary nurses and three vets. My day begins by writing the names and informaiton of all the animals needing surgery on our whiteboard. This lets the vet team knows which surgeries need to take place.
Varying day to day, I will either work alongside a vet to provide full veterinary checks on sick theatre inpatients, or assist in theatre monitoring anaesthesia for surgical procedures.
There are a large number of animals coming in and out of The Mayhew and all require a veterinary check. This is true for those being admitted as an intake before going to a new home, sick animals, those needing to go on for treatment, or those that have finished treatment. As each of these animals get put on the board for checking, I collect them from their cabin and bring them into theatre for the vet to check.
At The Mayhew a Low Cost Vaccination Clinic is held every Wednesday and Thursday so I spend time with our Animal Welfare Officers in reception, seeing on average about 20 clients. General advice and information is given to each client and we answer any questions they may have.
Nurses clinics are held every Thursday afternoon. This willl include microchipping, nail clipping, general nurses checks and advice. I find these a great opportunity to gain experience and independence in the surgery and consider our Low Cost Vaccinations and Nurses Clinics a great way of supporting pet owners and responsible pet ownership.
