Seasons Greetings from The Mayhew Animal Home

Henry and Tilly

Henry and Tilly

Christmas is a time for sharing as well as for showing those that you care about just how special they are to you. Many people get together with their family and friends at Christmas to spread some festive cheer. At The Mayhew Animal Home, we try to make this time of year as cheerful as possible for those furry residents who are with us, animals that through no fault of their own have no family to share this time of year with.

Some of the animals that will be spending Christmas with us are older, making them harder to rehome. They might be in good health, well trained and friendly, but their age means that they are not the first choice when people are looking to rehome a cat or dog. These older animals need extra special care and attention to keep their spirits up.

At Christmas, we like to give all of our animals, young and old, some special extra treats. Although our dogs, cats and rabbits cannot share a full traditional Christmas dinner with us in the staff room – much as some of them would like to! – we do like to prepare some tasty morsels, extra fish or greens or a large juicy bone for that special festive meal.

To help us create the Christmas spirit, why not sponsor some festive presents for one or more of our animals? The older animals described here will all be spending Christmas at The Mayhew and we have no doubt that any contributions, no matter how small, will be gratefully received.

Max

Henry and Tilly are thirteen-year-old poodles. They were brought into The Mayhew when their owner’s partner died and she felt she could not cope with them on her own. This adorable brother and sister have always lived together and will be spending this Christmas keeping snug in their kennel at The Mayhew before we start to look again for a perfect new home for them in the New Year.

Mary and Joseph are two shy but loving cats who arrived at The Mayhew together owing to domestic problems. Mary is eight-years-old while Joseph, her best friend, is ten. Both cats will be spending a quiet Christmas at The Mayhew where they will get lots of TLC, including some of their favourite culinary treats and a nice warm bed for them to curl up in.

Eleven-year-old Max is at The Mayhew because of his owner’s bad health. A German Shepherd cross, Max is a right old character who loves to be made a fuss of. We’ll be doing just that over Christmas, hopefully making his stay here as happy, secure and enjoyable as possible. A few extra treats go a long way!
