Job Title: Home Visitor

Responsible To

Adoption Officer and/or Volunteer Co-ordinator

Main Objectives

  • To support the Adoption Officers in finding suitable homes for the animals in our care
  • To positively contribute to the long-term care and welfare of our animals by providing feedback to the Adoption Officer about prospective home environments and owners

Main Duties

Attending relevant training

  • To attend The Mayhew Animal Home’s training session on how to carry out home visits

Arranging Home Visits

  • Following a request from the Adoption Officer make prompt contact with the prospective new owners to arrange a mutually convenient time for the visit and confirm the day and time of visit with the Adoption officer

Carrying out Home Visits

  • To arrive for the home visit on time and with Mayhew ID
  • To be friendly and professional at all times
  • To be aware of health and safety issues when carrying out a home visit
  • To carry out a detailed home visit in line with the training given
  • To promote the stated objectives and policies of The Mayhew, avoiding personal opinion if inconsistent with Mayhew policy
  • To communicate the next steps to the potential owners so they know what to expect

Providing Feedback to the Adoption Officer

  • To contact the Adoption officer immediately after the home visit with feedback (even if it is a voice message/email in the first instance)

Responsibility of Adoption an animal

  • To accept it is the Mayhew Animal Home’s final decision as to where an animal is re-homed

  • Rabbits all areas
  • Dogs postcode areas (West and East London, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Kent and postcode areas ‘RM’, ‘PO’,’HP’ and ‘EN’)

Application Forms

To apply for the Home Visitor Volunteer role at The Mayhew Animal Home, you must print and fill in two forms, our main Volunteer Application Form, and a Home Visitor Application Form. If you are applying for more than one volunteering vacancy at The Mayhew, you only need to send the main volunteer application form once.

Upon receipt of your application form you will either be invited to The Mayhew Animal Home for an informal interview (usually on a Thursday or Sunday) to discuss your application further, or if your application is unsuccessful you will be sent a letter or email notifying you that we will not be taking your application any further on this occasion. We aim to acknowledge your application within two weeks of receipt.
