The Mayhew provide the work placement for this course and it is a great grounding for a career in animal care, respected throughout the industry. Please click here for further details.

The Mayhew's NVQ in Animal Care has now been changed to: Level 2 Award in Work-based Animal Care (QCF- qualification credited framework). For further information on the changes, please visit: www.nptc.org.uk.

The Mayhew Animal Home is proud to offer this new qualification in Level 2 Animal Care. This work-based qualification is run by The Mayhew Animal Home in conjunction with The College of Animal Welfare (CAW). The Mayhew provide the work placement for this course.

The course is 12 months long and is a self-study course. Each student is expected to work in a voluntary capacity (unpaid) three days a week at The Mayhew in order to gain practical experience for his or her qualification and this will include one weekend day.

Are you motivated and passionate? Are you prepared to dedicate your time to gain knowledge and understanding of the care of companion animals? Then read on:

The Procedure:

The first step of our course is to attend an initial interview followed by a trial day. This will give you a peek into the day to day duties Successful applicants will then need to commit to the starting date and take part in four days of classroom based information sessions and hands on training, concluding in a simple theory test.

All successful candidates will go onto a 2-month probation period before a final assessment. On completion of this they will be registered with the College of Animal Welfare. Then the hard work begins.

In house you will work alongside trained members of staff. This work is hard and can be dirty! Your duties will be divided between kennel, cattery and rabbit areas, feeding, cleaning and taking part in the general husbandry of the animals. Where possible, time will also be allocated in our operating theatre and working in other departments of the home.

During your course you will need to complete an e-portfolio consisting of a number of modules relating to the care and welfare of animals. At the end of each module your work will be assessed before presenting it to the College Assessors.

We will provide a weekly theory sessions at The Mayhew, however as the course is not classroom based it is in your own interest that you research particular areas. Books and the internet are useful tools, as are the staff, many of whom have achieved the former NVQ qualification. The course is a good grounding for a career in animal care and is respected throughout the industry. The work is challenging but rewarding for anyone looking for a career with animals. Please note, undertaking this course at The Mayhew does not guarantee paid employment at the end of the course.

Education

The Mayhew recognizes that education is key, not only to the prevention of unwanted animals but also to the appropriate care that animals require. We promote respect and compassion for animals in all sections of our community and beyond through our activities, campaigns and educational programme.

Educational visits to The Mayhew: The Mayhew Animal Home welcomes groups of students aged from seven to eleven into The Home for a talk and tour. The visits usually last between an hour and an hour and a half and will involve a short tour and a talk about responsible pet ownership and safety around animals. There will be a short quiz at the end and a Mayhew Educational Pack will be given to each student. Please note that our Animal Welfare Officers are not teachers and are unable to follow key skills guidelines.

We would prefer it if schools could visit us as we find it more beneficial for the students but occasionally we can make an exception so please e-mail or call us on 020 8968 2352 to discuss specific requirements.

The Mayhew in our Community: We also try and accommodate community groups such as Woman's Clubs, Rotary Clubs, Brownies, Girl guides, Beavers and Scouts but can only do so at the weekend. Please e-mail or call us on 020 8968 2352 to discuss the possibility of a visit.
