The Home
The Mayhew Animal Home functions day to day as a rescue centre for abandoned or abused dogs, cats and rabbits. We have a community veterinary clinic on site and function as a re homing facility for the animals in our care.
Humane Education Centre and community work
As a dual function, the Animal Home is also the site of our Humane Education Centre and this extends into the community with the programmes run at the Home and offsite by our four Animal Welfare Officers. Programmes which include:
Homeless community support
Our Animal Welfare Officers work with several organisations who offer support to homeless people with animals in order to provide welfare advice and assistance. They visit St Mungos and Broadway accommodation in order to give health checks to the animals, provide flea and worm treatment and book in for any vaccination or neutering appointments at The Mayhew's veterinary clinic. Our vets and AWOs also attend the Crisis at Christmas shelter to provide the same support to homeless people with animals at the temporary shelter over the holiday period.
Pet Refuge
Our Animal Welfare Officers run The Mayhew's Pet Refuge programme, which provides the opportunity for support and foster care for some pet owners who may be facing a personal crisis and have no other option of help for care for their pet. This may be in circumstances of domestic violence, eviction or property damage such as fire, or it may be because of an extended stay in hospital. Our AWOs will find the best possible foster carer for the duration, so that the animals are not housed at The Mayhew kennels. For more information about this programme call our Animal Welfare Officers on 020 8968 2352.
Trap, Neuter and Return programme for feral cats (TNR)
Our Animal Welfare Officers run a Trap, Neuter and Return programme for feral cats (TNR). There are many cat colonies living in London and it is important that they are neutered and health checked for diseases such as FIV and FeLV. Our AWOs will trap the cats on location and bring them back to The Mayhew Community Veterinary Clinic for neutering and health checks. They will then re-release them to their colony location, providing the area is safe. If litters of kittens are brought in, then in the majority of cases and if they are under 10 weeks old, the litter will remain at The Mayhew, where they will be socialised and put forward for adoption.
Pet Industry workshops
Our Animal Welfare Officers arrange workshop opportunities throughout the year for the employees and managers working within the Pet Industry, for example pet shops. The Mayhew does not agree with selling animals in shops, though the need to share education is vital and with these workshops, employees can learn more about the needs of different animals, welfare concerns and can then impart this information to anyone purchasing an animal from their store. BARK
Brent BARK is a collaboration we are involved in, consisting of The Mayhew Animal Home, the Metropolitan Police Service, the RSPCA, Brent Housing Partnership and Brent Council.
It is a forum which was established in 2007 in order to tackle the issues surrounding the irresponsible use and mistreatment of dogs. Brent BARK was the first collaborative project of its kind and now several other London boroughs have followed suit and recognised the successes to be gained by working together and sharing information.
Several other BARK projects have been established and The Mayhew's Animal Welfare Officers also work with Hammersmith and Fulham Council on their monthly BARK street patrols.
The Brent BARK project meets on a monthly basis and undertakes regular patrols of the local borough and visits addresses and known problem areas where there have been concerns about a dog's welfare.
The Mayhew's charity ethos is to help 'both animal and owner' and often on these patrols, and at BARK community events, our Animal Welfare Officers (AWOs) are able to chat with many dog owners and community members about advice they may be looking for.
The purpose isn't to carry out a patrol in order to enforce a punishment, but to have an active community presence and our AWOs will provide free micro chipping for anyone they meet on their patrols who may wish to register their dog.
The aim is to improve safety around all dogs within the community and improve the health and welfare of dogs in Brent and Hammersmith and Fulham. BARK also provides advice to the public on animal welfare issues when approached out on patrol and also whilst taking part in community events.
This successful forum ensures that, whatever the issue, there is the combined experience and knowledge to deal with the matter.
This is a key reason why The Mayhew is committed to such a project. Animal welfare issues and social issues are intrinsically linked and is why we work in our local communities on many issues meaning more open communication channels resulting in a higher awareness about animals welfare and more help for those animals that need it.
Education Programmes
The Mayhew Animal Home offers a range of training programmes and our veterinary clinic is an approved training centre for Veterinary Nurses.
We also run a course for Level 2 in Animal Care in conjunction with The College of Animal Welfare (CAW).
We welcome work experience from schools and colleges for placements learning about animal care. Click here for more information on our educational work.
Veterinary
Our onsite Community Veterinary Clinic at the Home offers low cost-vaccinations and neutering (including FREE neutering for all bull breeds) plus a nurses health clinic.
We don't provide full veterinary services, however further information can be found on the areas above by visiting the 'Our Services' sections of our cat and dog areas.
